How are newsrooms rethinking election coverage?

David Scott is Vice President of AP Elections at The Associated Press. He is responsible for all aspects of AP’s elections business, including the decision, public opinion research and vote tabulation teams, the elections technology platform and AP Election’s revenue and customer engagement efforts. Scott has overseen AP’s election decision team in five November general elections and led the development of AP’s election survey, AP VoteCast, and the cooperative’s transition to The Voter Poll. David joined the AP in 1999 as a reporter in St. Louis and has served as managing editor, head of strategy and operations, U.S. politics editor and other senior leadership roles in the AP’s News division. A graduate of the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism, he lives in Portland, Maine, and Washington, D.C.

Josh Lawson is head of civic and strategic risk at OpenAI, leading election preparedness alongside other high-priority integrity domains. He came to OpenAI from the Aspen Institute, where he was director for AI & Democracy. Josh was previously head of electoral and emerging risk at Meta, and served as an editor at the White House and as chief legal counsel for the North Carolina Board of Elections. He studied law at Duke University School of Law and the University of North Carolina after government and politics at both George Washington University and UCLA. Josh was Millennium Fellow with the Atlantic Council and a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs.

Kimbriell Kelly is editor-in-chief of Chicago Public Media, the nation’s largest local nonprofit newsroom, overseeing a team of more than 140 staff at the Chicago Sun-Times. A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism executive and 25-year veteran investigative editor and reporter, Kelly has overseen multiple award-winning projects in some of the nation’s largest newsrooms, including The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. Kelly serves on the steering committee of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and is vice president of the board of the Fund for Investigative Journalism. She was twice named Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University, in 2020 and 2021, and has served as an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley, Roosevelt University and American University. She has degrees in journalism and English from Boston University and St. Xavier University in Chicago.

Maritza L. Félix is the founder and director of Conecta Arizona, a Spanish-language news service connecting communities in Arizona and Sonora through digital platforms. Maritza created and hosts the podcast Cruzando Líneas and co-produces and co-hosts Comadres al Aire. In 2025, she received the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) Courage in Journalism Award for her fearless and impactful coverage of border and Spanish-speaking communities. She was also named Innovator of the Year in 2022 by the Local Media Association and earned the Cecilia Vaisman Award for Best Hispanic Multimedia Journalist. She is a senior fellow of the JSK Community Impact Fellowship at Stanford, a graduate of The Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program at Columbia University, and the Media Transformation Challenge (MTC) at Poynter. She also holds fellowships from The Carter Center, the Education Writers Association (EWA), Feet in 2 Worlds (Fi2W), the IWMF Adelante Fellowship, and the Listening Post Collective.

Arnon Mishkin has led the Fox News Decision Team since 2008, leading efforts to improve election day polling as well as the statistical models that news organization use to identify trends early in the evening. By profession, he has over thirty years of management consulting experience. Formerly a partner at the Boston Consulting Group and at Mitchell Madison, he now works independently, including focusing on helping media companies address the ongoing challenges of the digital and AI worlds. He has served as a visiting fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and at USC Center for a Political Future. Early in his career, he worked as a political consultant for David Garth, one of the pioneers of the field.
