Data collaborations: how partnerships are reshaping local journalism

As trust in data becomes more contested, newsrooms face a growing challenge: how to make complex analysis credible, accessible and relevant to local audiences.

At AP, the answer has increasingly been collaboration.

In a recent AP Forward session with partners from Stanford’s Big Local News and The Seattle Times, one theme stood out. Data journalism is no longer a solo effort. It is becoming a shared process, where multiple organizations contribute, validate and localize insights together.

Through AP’s Localize It Guides, this approach is already taking shape. These guides provide datasets, context and story angles tailored for local use. Sometimes that means deep analysis of federal funding impacts. Other times, it is something simpler, like identifying local ties to national events.

“Data means different things to different newsrooms,” said Jennifer Lehman of AP. “The key is making it usable in the moment they need it.”

The most effective collaborations go beyond sharing numbers. They include context, methodology and direct access to source material. This allows local reporters to adapt national insights to their communities with confidence.

Seattle Times reporter Claire Withycombe highlighted the importance of this support. “When you haven’t analyzed the data yourself, you need to understand its limitations,” she said. “Having that conversation upfront makes a big difference.”

Actionable takeaways for newsrooms

  • Prioritize usability over complexity. Data must be immediately actionable for local reporters.
  • Pair datasets with context and explanation, not just raw numbers.
  • Create opportunities for collaboration before publication, not after.

Questions for leaders

  • Are we making our data usable for local storytelling, or just publishing analysis?
