AP Columbia, Mo. reporter Zagier to St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — Alan Scher Zagier, an Associated Press reporter who has focused on higher education and crime coverage from mid-Missouri since 2005, is transferring to the cooperative's St. Louis bureau in August.

Zagier, 46, begins work in St. Louis on Aug. 5, reporting to St. Louis Correspondent Jim Salter and Missouri-Kansas News Editor Chris Clark in Kansas City, Mo.

“Alan is a strong reporter with a proven history of reacting swiftly to breaking news across the state and breaking news himself through dogged reporting,” Clark said. “He’ll provide a significant boost to our coverage of St. Louis and eastern Missouri that our members will appreciate.”

Since joining AP in Columbia, Mo., in 2005, Zagier has covered national higher education issues and reported from the scenes of natural disasters including the 2011 Joplin tornado.

He has also examined several high-profile criminal prosecutions that later fell under scrutiny, including the case of Mark Woodworth, a northwest Missouri man whose murder conviction has been jeopardized by questions — uncovered by Zagier — about the conduct of prosecutors and their handling of evidence.

Before joining AP, Zagier was an investigative reporter and editor for The Naples (Fla.) Daily News and was a visiting professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has also worked for newspapers in North Carolina and as a national correspondent for The Boston Globe.
