NEW YORK — The Associated Press announced today that media lawyer Craig Linder has been named senior vice president and general counsel of the global news agency.
Linder will lead AP’s global legal function, protecting AP’s journalism, intellectual property and commercial and newsgathering operations, as well as overseeing corporate governance.
“Craig brings an exceptional combination of legal expertise, business judgment and a deep appreciation for the value of fact-based journalism,” said AP President and CEO Daisy Veerasingham. “His proven record of protecting journalists, defending original reporting and helping news organizations pursue responsible growth makes him ideally suited to lead AP’s legal team at a time of profound change across the media industry.”
Linder joins AP from Dow Jones, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal, where he most recently served as vice president and associate general counsel. During more than 16 years at Dow Jones, he advised newsroom and business leaders on newsgathering, journalist safety, content licensing, emerging technologies, litigation, regulatory developments and global risk.
He played a key role in Dow Jones’ response to Russia’s 491-day detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

Linder earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a senior editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and is a graduate of the University of Rochester, where he was editor-in-chief of the student newspaper. He began his career in journalism, working as a reporter for American Banker and States News Service and as a copy editor at USA Today.
Linder serves as vice chairman of the New York News Publishers Association, a trade organization that advocates for the interests of news publishers.
