AP scored a rare sit down, on-camera interview with International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva that broke news: She urged China to rethink its zero-COVID policy and said the U.S. Federal Reserve has to keep raising rates for the good of the global economy.

Georgieva spoke with AP’s David McHugh, Pietro De Cristofaro and Michael Sohn about topics like the food crisis spurred by Russia’s war in Ukraine and the need for the world to work together on climate change.

But when she said China needed a “recalibration” of its zero-COVID policy, McHugh didn’t let her off the hook — he pressed her to explain what that meant in the wake of widespread protests just days earlier. And when he did, AP broke news: She said China needed to end mass lockdowns and use a more targeted approach.
