Staff of The Associated Press worked day and night through January to capture fast-moving developments in what the U.S. Department of Homeland Security called the largest immigration enforcement operation in its history. They produced powerful photos, text and audio stories capturing a wide range of voices, along with live feeds, NR/CR videos and exclusive reporting.

Reporters were quick to arrive at the scenes of two fatal shootings of U.S. citizens in Minneapolis, revealing the identity of the shooter in the death of Renee Good. Journalists regularly witnessed street confrontations and other dramatic moments, including forcible entries into homes, and profiled immigrants, neighborhoods and residents directly affected by the daily upheaval.

Several journalists who live in the Twin Cities persevered as their own neighborhoods became flashpoints between immigration agents and protesters. Other staffers and freelancers traveled to the region for extended assignments. Many worked long days and nights in frigid temperatures. With new developments and news conferences emerging at times almost hourly, communication and coordination across teams were seamless.

Beyond Minnesota, dozens of reporters, writers and editors across formats strengthened coverage and helped ease the burden on colleagues in the field.

For their dedicated teamwork and comprehensive coverage of the Minnesota immigration enforcement surge, the staff of The Associated Press earn this week’s Best of AP — Special Citation.
