Through dogged efforts, reporter Sam Mednick uncovered the presence of a U.S. security company entering the Central African Republic, a challenge to Russian mercenaries already there. Mednick rounded out the package by shooting her own photos and video.
Rumors had been swirling for months about a private U.S. security company entering the Central African Republic, a challenge to Russian mercenaries already there. Dakar-based reporter Mednick on a rare assignment uncovered the facts after weeks of careful digging.
Through a letter from CAR’s presidential office to the security company, Bancroft Global Development, contacts on the ground and fighters who worked alongside Russian security, Mednick corroborated the presence of Bancroft, the sequence of events and the backlash that ensued. The story was the first to include on-the-record comments from Bancroft.
The story widely circulated in the intelligence community and special operations forces, shedding light on information that hadn’t been previously reported.
