Washington reporter Dan Merica used his strong source network to show that Elon Musk’s influential super PAC spent roughly $200 million over four-plus months to help elect Donald Trump. After Trump’s victory, Dan took on a story about the allied super PACs to which the Trump campaign outsourced its get-out-the-vote efforts and other operations. A source gave Merica a tip about not just to the total dollar amount spent by Musk, but specific details about how the America PAC tailored its efforts and how the Trump campaign worked directly with the super PAC, relying on a Federal Election Commission ruling earlier this year that set new rules and perhaps a new paradigm for how presidential campaigns will operate. Getting details on Musk and America PAC’s political work is extremely competitive and dozens of outlets used AP’s story.
