King Charles III’s first trip to the United States as king was a historic event that took weeks of planning, with most of the work centered in Washington and close coordination from London and New York. The Washington video team quickly built strong relationships with the British Embassy, which proved critical to the success of the coverage.
Sourcing and persistence paid off, securing the AP unilateral camera positions that no other agency or media organizations had and exclusive early access to the British ambassador’s residence, archives and royal gardens in Washington. The AP also had an exclusive location to photograph the King and Queen arriving at the White House Diplomatic Reception Room.
AP produced four days of live coverage across all major events, using new production strategies to increase engagement. Field reporting further strengthened the coverage, with reporters on the ground delivering live updates over visuals and describing events in real time.
The judges were impressed by the depth of the planning and preparation for this coverage, which paid off in high usage metrics and strong audience engagement.
