The AP reported exclusively that the Trump administration had told prosecutors in Miami to stand down on Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodriguez, even though she had been on the radar of federal law enforcement for years.

Miami-based reporter Joshua Goodman was tipped off by former officials that the Trump administration had shut down any investigation into Rodriguez. Investigative reporter Jim Mustian, with a deep network of sources inside the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, quickly heard the same.

Washington-based reporter Alanna Durkin Richer provided the essential confirmation to carry the story to the wire.

They learned that the probes were halted due to the pivotal role the socialist leader has played stabilizing Venezuela and inviting American investment into the country’s oil industry.

The story shone a light on the evolving relations between the U.S. and Venezuela and how the Trump administration operates its foreign policy, harnessing AP’s footprint, a strong spirit of collaboration and deep sourcing.
