America 250 Liberty Bell Replicas

Amid the AP’s America 250 coverage, Raleigh video journalist Allen G. Breed set out to capture the unusual passion of a small group of the Liberty Bell’s biggest fans, who try to visit the replicas that were made for each state decades ago.

He wove the history with photos, old and new, for a distinctive story, tracked down bell hunters for colleagues to interview, and recruited others in various states to ring their local bells for a social video that illustrated AP’s U.S. footprint. Breed also collaborated with Phil Holm in graphics on a map showing readers where the bells are accessible and with Jennifer Lehman on a Localize It guide for customers.

The result was a package of cross-team, multiformat joy, wonder and discovery that yielded outstanding audience engagement.
