Perseverance from a team of cross-format journalists in Tallinn, Moscow, Tbilisi and Yerevan produced a compelling report on how ordinary Russians are fleeing the country amid uncertainty for the future.
Reporting on life in Russia has been increasingly difficult in recent months, as Russians have grown extremely wary of talking to independent or foreign media, even on condition of anonymity. Senior correspondent Dasha Litvinova contacted around two dozen people in her efforts to find people to speak. Members of the Moscow video team were also tenacious in their search for people willing to go on camera and, in rarely granted access, found someone willing to be filmed as he left Russia.
Working with producer Sophiko Megrelidze in Tbilisi, AP freelancer Ani Khachatryan in Yerevan and Top Stories Editor Brian Friedman, the resulting all formats story gave audiences an excellent snapshot of the fears and frustrations being felt in Russia right now, and was especially relevant as part of coverage the team put together to mark the country’s parliamentary elections.
