After the Trump administration proposed axing most Head Start regulations in favor of state rules, the AP, working in partnership with members of the Education Reporting Network, launched three exclusive reporting efforts to show the impact. Reporters Gisela Salomon and Rebecca Blackwell published rare in-person journalism from a dual-language preschool, where instruction would have to be in English under the proposed regulations, reporting powerful, touching classroom scenes, with intimate photos. Reporter Moriah Balingit centered Head Start parents to show how the preschools’ supports can transform grownups’ lives – services the administration would make optional while reporter Sharon Lurye partnered with an APFJ newsroom to show the impact of watered-down discipline rules. To accompany the coverage, Wong authored an encyclopedic Localize It with careful instructions on how to use federal data sources to cover local Head Start centers.
