Reporting from Russia is very difficult — and getting real people to share their views is even harder. But correspondent Dasha Litvinova has managed this trick time and time again. For her latest story, Top Stories Editor Brian Friedman suggested she take a look at how increasing Ukrainian attacks disrupted the summer for many Russians, with long fuel lines and canceled flights forcing many to abandon or rethink travel. Litvinova took a step back and put this new Ukrainian effort into perspective, including impressive data that showed just how many attacks Russians have come under. When she struggled to get people on the record, Brian suggested the video team in Moscow might have some success by asking a fairly anodyne question to people on the street: How was your summer? They did just that, which yielded some surprisingly honest answers in an environment where few feel comfortable speaking openly about the war. The resulting text story, accompanied by strong video, was a compelling read and an excellent primer in the shifting tactics of the Ukraine war.
