Alex Brandon named AP chief White House photographer
In a memo to staff on Tuesday, Washington Bureau Chief Anna Johnson and Assistant Bureau Chief for Photos Pablo Monsivais announced that veteran journalist Alex Brandon has been named AP’s chief White House photographer:
We are thrilled to announce that Alex Brandon will be the AP’s chief White House photographer! Alex has been a staple of our stellar coverage of the White House and presidency since he joined the Washington bureau in 2009, covering every president since Barack Obama. Alex has impeccable news judgment and an incredible ability to spot the image of the moment during countless big news events.

Alex also is a tremendous colleague and member of the Washington photo team and the wider bureau. He is the first to volunteer to help out the team and will find unique and creative ways to give the AP the edge in every assignment. His knowledge, expertise and talents are evident every day when he is behind the lens.
In this role, Alex will serve as the main point of contact with AP Photos and the White House and will help lead our exceptional team as they plan for daily and big event coverage of the presidency.
Alex was part of the AP team that won a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography in 2021 for coverage of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. Before joining AP in 2006, Alex was a staff photographer with The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, and his coverage was included in the newspaper’s 2006 Pulitzer Prizes for Public Service and Breaking News Reporting for Hurricane Katrina. In addition to the Pulitzers, Alex also has received several honors over the years from the White House News Photographers Association.
A graduate of the University of Missouri, Alex also has been on assignment to Mount Everest, embedded with U.S. troops in Afghanistan, and has covered several Super Bowls, Final Four basketball tournaments and multiple presidential campaigns. In addition to the White House, Alex also is a veteran traveler with the State Department and Pentagon.
Please join us in congratulating Alex!
Anna and Pablo
