“2000 Meters to Andriivka,” the documentary from The Associated Press and FRONTLINE, has won a News & Documentary Emmy® Award for Outstanding Direction: Documentary.
The honor was presented Thursday night at the 47th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, recognizing the film’s gripping and intimate portrayal of the war in Ukraine.
Produced by FRONTLINE and AP, “2000 Meters to Andriivka” offers a deeply personal look at the toll of the Russia-Ukraine war through experiences of soldiers fighting on the front lines. The documentary comes from the Oscar®-winning team behind “20 Days in Mariupol” — including Ukrainian filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mstyslav Chernov, producer and editor Michelle Mizner, producer Raney Aronson-Rath and executive producer Derl McCrudden.
Filmed during Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive, Chernov and his AP colleague Alex Babenko followed a Ukrainian brigade as it fought through roughly one mile of a heavily fortified forest in an effort to liberate the Russian-occupied village of Andriivka. The film captures the impossible decisions soldiers face in the trenches and the human cost of war as they fight for every inch of land.
The documentary received a total of six Emmy® Award nominations and was previously nominated for a BAFTA Film Award.
