Dramatic sports images by Associated Press photographers depicting boxing and bullfighting received top honors in the 2014 Pictures of the Year International (POYi) photojournalism competition.
POYi is a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri’s journalism school.
“It’s gratifying to see the work of so many of our talented photojournalists from around the globe recognized in this prestigious competition,” said Santiago Lyon, vice president and director of photography at AP.

The winners were announced today. AP photographers collected a total of nine awards:
• First Place - Sports Picture Story – Daniel Ochoa de Olza (Madrid, Spain)
• Second Place – Spot News Single Image – Andoni Lubaki (Freelancer from Spain)
• Second Place – Science and Natural History Single Image – David Guttenfelder (Tokyo)
• Second Place – Portrait Series – Oded Balilty (Jerusalem)
• Third Place – Issue Reporting Picture Story (Freelance/Agency) – Andres Kudacki (Freelancer in Spain, from Argentina)
• Award of Excellence – Natural Disaster Single Image – Sue Ogrocki (Oklahoma City)
• Award of Excellence – Spot News Single Image – Mohammad Sajjad (Pakistan)
• Award of Excellence – News Picture Story (Freelance/Agency) – Jerome Delay (South Africa)
