The Associated Press today released the 58th edition of The Associated Press Stylebook, the must-have reference for writers, editors, students and professionals. It is the definitive resource for journalists.

The edition features an expanded chapter on artificial intelligence with new and updated guidance and entries reflecting the rapid evolution and proliferation of the technology.

New additions include:

  • A new entry on AI agent, describing artificial intelligence systems designed to act autonomously on behalf of a person or institution and advising to explain the technology’s specific use when using the term.
  • A new entry on AI slop, a term describing certain kinds of low-quality, mass-produced online content generated using artificial intelligence, including text, music and imagery.
  • A new entry on vibe coding, a slang term for using artificial intelligence tools to help write or troubleshoot computer code, advising to avoid the term outside quotations in favor of clearer language.

The new edition also includes updates reflecting evolving language, common usage and other developments across a range of topics. Among them are:

  • Healthcare as one word.
  • A new standalone entry on Native Americans and Indigenous peoples, reflecting updated guidance for writing about these communities and identities.
  • Updates to initials guidance for people who prefer no periods, such as Vice President JD Vance and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.
  • K-pop, reflecting its expanding global influence beyond music.
  • Murphy’s law, including guidance on the origin of the term.
  • And kerfuffle, noting the correct spelling is not “kerfluffle.”

With thousands of entries across nearly 500 pages, the AP Stylebook is widely used as a writing and editing reference by journalists and communicators across a wide range of industries. Updated regularly since its initial publication in 1953, the AP Stylebook provides fundamental guidelines for spelling, language, punctuation, usage and journalistic style.

The AP Stylebook is available in spiral-bound print — now published biennially — and online in several digital formats. AP Stylebook Online has become the primary way professional writers and editors access this definitive resource. It is regularly updated to reflect changes in language and news writing in real-time.
