The music video seemed stranger than fiction, Janetsky thought. Colón served for several years on Guzmán’s defense team after answering a Craigslist ad but always wanted to be a singer. Colón teamed up with Guzmán’s wife, Emma Coronel, who was also looking for work after serving prison time related to her husband’s drug trafficking, to launch Colón’s new career.
Colón gave other interviews, but Janetsky’s used it to open a broader discussion of the booming popularity of this music genre but addressing the questions around glorifying the lifestyle. Janetsky reached out to colleagues in Italy after she found out Coronel and Colón would be at Milan Fashion Week. Milan-based photographer Antonio Calanni captured the women on the runway, bringing the characters to life. The AP story was widely shared on social media and widely used by clients. Janetsky, based in Mexico City, worked with the social team to craft an Instagram post that was one of the top performers at the time. Calanni’s photos were used by some of AP’s biggest clients in Italy.
