AMA spreads AP knowledge on immigration via Reddit

Elliot Spagat, Rebecca Santana, and Christopher Sherman—who have extensively covered the impact of the Trump administration’s immigration policies between the U.S. and Mexico—wanted to engage directly with readers to expand the reach of their reporting. They proposed hosting an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit.

Working with Karena Phan from Digital News, they organized and managed the AMA. Phan suggested converting key insights from the discussion into a story for AP customers and APNews.com, further amplifying its impact.

This effort not only expanded the reach of AP’s immigration coverage but also brought reader-driven questions into the broader news ecosystem. It also marked the first time AP had published an AMA recap on the wire.
