Using economic data, White House reporter Josh Boak pinpointed an area around Dayton, Ohio, that had been buffeted by trade and economic policy and worked to find people missing out on the boom described by President Donald Trump as he tries to bolster his party’s fortunes ahead of the midterm elections. Boak and photographer Carolyn Kaster talked to people who had just been laid off from a factory, layoffs that erased an entire year of job growth in the area. The state is critical for the GOP’s chances of holding the Senate. While in the field, Trump announced he would hold a rally in the community the same week. Boak and Kaster pulled the story together for the day Trump visited and worked with reporters and editors covering the rally to make sure the feature complemented the breaking news coverage. The story was the biggest traffic draw of the weekend for AP News.
