White House reporter Darlene Superville landed an exclusive interview with Stewart McLaurin, the longtime president of the White House Historical Association — the first and only interview he has given following the Trump administration’s demolition of the East Wing.

The piece resonated in part because it was counterintuitive: rather than lamenting the loss, McLaurin shared that the demolition spurred intense public curiosity about the building’s history — a “silver lining,” as he described it.

Superville also broke news that the association had used 3D scanning technology to capture a full digital record of “every room, space, nook and cranny” of the East Wing — down to hinges and doorknobs — so the space could potentially be recreated virtually in the future.

Judges praised the scoop and the fresh angle on one of the most high-profile stories of the year in Washington.

For her exclusive interview and reporting, Darlene Superville earns this week’s Best of the Week citation.
