Black Athletes-Activism Dilemma

Sports writer Alanis Thames and Top Stories editor Mary Sedor led a compelling and timely examination of how Black athletes have long used their platforms for social change—despite the risks. As diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs come under mounting attack, Thames captured the deep-rooted history and present-day stakes of Black athletes’ activism, while Sedor’s edits broadened the scope for a wider audience.

A true all-formats effort, the package combined powerful storytelling with visuals from Patrick Sison, graphics by Jake O’Connell, and presentation by Rachel Leathe. With reporting contributions from Tim Reynolds and Cliff Brunt, the piece illustrated the intersection of sports and politics in an engaging and accessible way.

The result was an impactful story that resonated well beyond the sports world.
