France G7 Summit Trump

As access to G7 summits has become increasingly restricted, AP’s France team began planning coverage of this year’s gathering in Evian a year ago, pushing for journalists’ access to world leaders. The effort paid off with AP in the room as open microphones captured unusually candid moments during high-level talks, including Donald Trump calling himself “the boss,” threatening an EU leader over Greenland, and other revealing exchanges that resonated with audiences worldwide. Video journalist Mark Carlson identified the unusually clear audio, flagged it across teams, and compiled key moments from multiple feeds. Reporter Colin Binkley turned the remarks into a widely read behind-the-scenes narrative, while John Leicester confirmed French organizers had not realized the conversations were audible. Alongside these exclusives, AP journalists navigated tense protests, coordinated complex livestreams and photo pools, delivered sharp live coverage and explanatory journalism and produced innovative previews and takeaways that illuminated the significance of the summit and the dynamics shaping global diplomacy.
