Curiosity, persistence and teamwork led to a remarkable AP exclusive beneath one of the world’s most famous landmarks. Video journalist Nicolas Garriga, senior producer Jeffrey Schaeffer and culture writer Thomas Adamson gained rare access to an archaeological dig under Notre Dame Cathedral, revealing discoveries that are reshaping understanding of Paris’ ancient past.
Garriga spent weeks negotiating entry to what many archaeologists consider a historic excavation. Schaeffer then obtained access to the conservation facility where newly uncovered artifacts were being cleaned and catalogued, allowing AP to document Roman coins, rare ceramics and inscribed pottery fragments not yet fully understood by researchers.
Drawing on his expertise as a culture writer, Adamson placed the discoveries in a broader historical context, helping readers understand the significance of what was being unearthed beneath the busy streets of modern Paris.
