The Days Disrupted project leveraged AP’s global footprint to tell the story of how the economic fallout of the Iran war is impacting people far beyond where the fighting is happening, through the lens of seven people’s lived experiences.
Aniruddha Ghosal, Asia business climate reporter based in Hanoi, was closely following the economic fallout from the Iran war and wanted to find a way to show how the reverberations were impacting people’s everyday lives far beyond where the fighting was happening. He hit on the idea of vignettes that would closely focus on a single moment in each subject’s day to show how rising fuel prices and geopolitical changes were hitting home. The story expanded beyond Asia with journalists from other regions enthusiastically getting involved, using their expertise to find compelling characters and telling their stories with sensitivity and nuance. The project truly took a village and eventually involved more than 20 journalists on five continents.
Asia deputy news director Yan Arthur helped to get it off the ground by working with photographers early on to identify potential characters, while Southeast Asia news director Haruka Nuga helped figure out how to visualize it. Takis Mouzakis, news editor for digital storytelling and graphics, got involved early and created a stunning presentation. David Goldman and Patrick Sison curated the photos, ensuring the selection matched the tone and theme of the project, climate video producer Teresa de Miguel wrangled the video and director of new storytelling and digital innovation Ted Anthony handled the text editing.
The result was a series of intimate portraits that bring home the wide-ranging economic repercussions of this war while also highlighting AP’s reach and expertise. The final presentation received high engagement on APNews, and performed strongly with customers.
The judges were impressed by how the team was able to take a different angle on the story to show the real-world pocket-book impact on people, noting the great achievement of the team in finding these stories and telling them in an extraordinary way.
