Hong Kong exhibit to remember AP photojournalist Horst Faas

Photographs taken by the legendary Horst Faas, who won two Pulitzer Prizes during his nearly 50 years with The Associated Press, will be on view during September at The Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong.

Faas, who died in May at age 79, will be represented by his images documenting the Vietnam War and conflicts in Algeria, Bangladesh and Congo.

“So many moving eulogies have been written in praise of photojournalist Horst Faas, that it is impossible to add much to the legend, other than to say that it is all true, and that one can never paint the full picture,” said Robin Moyer, former Time magazine photojournalist. “Combing through Horst’s vast archives while curating this exhibit for The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Hong Kong has been an education as well as an honor. Thanks, Horst, for a life well seen through your unblinking lens, the mirror of our soul.”

“Horst Faas was a giant in the world of photojournalism,” AP Director of Photography Santiago Lyon said. “He was the dean of the photojournalistic community during the Vietnam War and was not only an extremely accomplished photographer in his own right, but also was diligent in getting as many cameras as possible out into the field, either in the hands of local photographers or his AP text reporter colleagues. This, combined with his decade-long stint in the country meant that AP had unsurpassed photographic coverage from that conflict. We are delighted to see his work on display in the august setting of The Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong.”

The exhibit, titled “Horst Faas 1933-2012: Photographer, Associated Press,” presented in cooperation with AP, will open with a reception on Sept. 4 and continue through Sept. 30.

Non-members may view the exhibit from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 to 5:30 p.m. daily.

The Foreign Correspondents’ Club is located on North Block, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong. The phone number is 2521 1511.
