Aging Nukes A four-part investigative series by Jeff Donn

When commercial nuclear power plants were being built in the United States, mostly in the 1960s and 1970s, the industry and government experts said they were designed to last 40 years. As the Pentagon stays quiet, AP reconstructs a US strike that killed over 100 Iranian children

On the first day of the war with Iran, after the United States and Israel launched their strikes, footage emerged of what looked to be a bombed Iranian school, and state media reported the deaths of 150 students. The images were searing, but little information came out about what had happened, from either Washington or Tehran. That is, little did, until […]

Nvidia’s AI chip sales surged again in latest quarter, but worries about a tech bubble persist

Nvidia’s sales of its artificial intelligence chipsets remained a hot commodity during the company’s latest quarter, but the demand wasn’t quite feverish enough to ease recent worries that the AI craze may be fading. The results announced Wednesday were hotly anticipated because Nvidia has emerged as key barometer of a two-year-old AI boom that has […]

In an uncertain environment for corporate giving, Liberty Mutual Foundation launches $600M endowment

Corporate foundations’ philanthropic commitments were called into question this past year as tariff-driven uncertainty, rising costs and tax law changes prompted many companies to reconsider their charitable strategies. Nonprofits received a reassuring answer this week, however, from the century-old, Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance. The major insurer’s nonprofit Liberty Mutual Foundation announced Wednesday the establishment of a $600 million […]

More than 150,000 uncounted COVID-19 deaths occurred early in the pandemic, a study finds

The COVID-19 pandemic’s early death toll was much higher than the official U.S. count, according to a new study that spotlights dramatic disparities in the uncounted deaths. About 840,000 COVID-19 deaths were reported on death certificates in 2020 and 2021. But a group of researchers — using a form of artificial intelligence — estimate that […]
