The Associated Press sought the 911 calls made during the Dec. 14, 2012, shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed 20 children and six educators. On Wednesday, the calls were posted on the town’s website after AP prevailed in a monthslong legal effort to obtain them.

“Several times a year, dedicated groups like this one gather to discuss the growing violence against journalists,” Associated Press Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll told the Inter American Press Association this past weekend. “And every year the outrages grow, the bodies of our friends and colleagues fall and our anger boils over. And yet, nothing changes.”

We were pleased to receive five awards on Tuesday evening from the Deadline Club, the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
