AP adds 2 journalists to Race and Ethnicity team

Managing Editor Brian Carovillano announced on Thursday Aaron Morrison and Katrease Stafford will join AP as race and ethnicity writers. Here is his memo to staff:

I am excited to share this news from Andale Gross, the leader of our U.S.-based Race and Ethnicity team, which is growing with two new additions, Katrease Stafford and Aaron Morrison.

Kat and Aaron will join AP in the coming weeks.

These additions to the team are part of a wider strategy to bring the Race and Ethnicity team’s work closer to our coverage on major stories. Race, identity and inequality cut across everything we cover. The team isn’t solely responsible for coverage of race. That’s the responsibility of every journalist at AP. But adding journalists who can focus on building distinctive, insightful coverage helps us ensure we make this area a priority.

For example, the team is closely collaborating with the 2020 politics team, and has also been looking at how race and identity has played out across the coronavirus story.

Both Kat and Aaron, a former AP intern, will report to Andale. Kat will report from Detroit, and Aaron will be based at New York headquarters. Kat will start work immediately with the 2020 campaign teams. Aaron will focus on criminal justice while also writing about larger themes of race and its intersection with newsworthy topics like sports, entertainment and government policy.

Please join us in welcoming these accomplished journalists, and reach out to get to know them!
