I’m very pleased to announce that we are naming Derl McCrudden, head of international video, as a new deputy managing editor for digital and visual journalism.

This is a critical job aimed at pulling together and harmonizing AP’s innovations around how we tell stories in video, photos and text for digital uses and social media, while maintaining excellence for our broadcast, photos and other customers.

In his first year in the job, Derl will help guide the newsroom’s digital strategy while focusing on a major effort to expand our ability to produce and publish video news at our regional editing centers around the world — for both broadcast and digital uses.

Derl joined the AP in 2010, and has served since 2014 as AP’s head of international video, based in London and responsible for international video output including live video. That deep broadcast video expertise, paired with his openness to digital change, make him the ideal person for this job. He is a strong advocate for new technologies and tools such as Bambuser that open up our ability to tell stories better and more quickly.

Before joining AP, Derl worked in broadcast news for 18 years as a producer making programs, and in the field, for ITN, Al Jazeera English and CNBC Asia.

Please join me in welcoming him to this new role.

Best,
Sally
