Astrid Galvan named national race writer
In a memo to staff, AP Race and Ethnicity Editor Andale Gross announced that Astrid Galvan starts today as national race writer:
I’m excited to share the news that we’ll be expanding our Race and Ethnicity team by bringing on a new full-time member – someone many of you know and who will help us strengthen our coverage of issues that impact Latino Americans.
Astrid Galvan, who has covered immigration for AP, will step into the role of national race writer starting on Tuesday. She will start in Phoenix, where she is currently based, but eventually move to Los Angeles.
Astrid is a dogged reporter with multimedia and Spanish-speaking skills and a passion for delving into issues that affect communities of color. She was a member of a 2019 Pulitzer finalist team for national reporting. The team examined immigration under former U.S. President Donald Trump, reporting that infants were among the children being forcibly separated from their families at the border and cataloging the facilities where kids were being held and sometimes physically abused.
Astrid uncovered the story of a 1-year-old boy who had been separated from his father at the border and was brought before an immigration court.
She also broke news on a story about the Greyhound bus company banning immigrants who were dropped off by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from waiting inside without a ticket. During the 2020 elections, she wrote about voting issues affecting Latinos.
In 2019, she also covered the mass shooting in her hometown of El Paso, Texas, where authorities have said the suspect targeted Hispanics.
Astrid started with the AP in 2014 as a legislative temporary reporter covering the Arizona legislature. Before AP, she was a reporter at the Albuquerque Journal and The Arizona Republic. She studied journalism at the University of Texas at El Paso and Arizona State University.
The R&E team is thrilled to have her in this new role.
