In a memo to staff on Thursday, Washington Bureau Chief Anna Johnson announced that Farnoush Amiri will be joining the national security team as a United Nations reporter based in New York:
Farnoush is a standout journalist who knows how to cover a big bureaucratic organization, build sources and juggle multiple priorities and breaking news stories – experience and expertise crucial for her new role. She will join correspondent Edith Lederer at the U.N. and is excited to deploy social video, explainers and other digitally friendly story forms that pull back the curtain on U.N. machinations. She also will collaborate with AP teams around the world on stories that effect real people and contribute to the biggest foreign policy stories of the day. She’s up to the task having already carved out a beat in Congress on foreign policy and traveling with Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
During her time covering Congress, Farnoush reported on the repercussions of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the debates over aid to Gaza and Ukraine, the House speaker battles and much, much more. Before joining the Washington team over three years ago, Farnoush was a state government reporter in Columbus, Ohio. She started her AP career in 2019 New York as a news associate.
Farnoush will start her new job in March after she moves to New York.
