Introducing AP’s 2025 global news interns

2025 Global News Interns – Alphabetical

In a memo to staff on Tuesday, Corinne Chin, director of news talent for recruitment, introduced AP’s 2025 class of global news interns:

We’re thrilled to welcome the 2025 class of global news interns to The Associated Press. Selected from a highly competitive pool of journalists around the world, this year’s interns bring with them a rich diversity of experiences, backgrounds and interests. They are joining AP bureaus across the globe, including New York, Washington, London, Mexico City, Nairobi, Dubai, Tokyo, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Please join us in giving them a warm welcome and get to know each of them below.

Louis Brettkelly, output producer intern, London 

Louis Brettkelly recently completed his master’s in broadcast journalism at City St. George’s University of London. As a multimedia reporter at City News, he covered stories across TV, digital platforms, radio and social media. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, he wrote about media manipulation as a tool of authoritarian control in Latin America. Louis is keen to deepen his understanding of journalism ethics and learn how newsrooms engage digital audiences, build trust and combat misinformation. He is fluent in French and Spanish, with working proficiency in Portuguese.

Alyce Brown, sports intern, New York 

Alyce Brown is an Iowa native and a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where she broke a national story exposing hazing on Northwestern’s football team as a Managing Editor at the Daily Northwestern. She has previously worked for ProPublica, the U.S. Open and the Minnesota Star Tribune. When she’s not in the press box, Alyce loves finding the best Silicon Valley biographies and banana bread recipes.

Joanna Chan, photography intern, London 

Joanna Chan is joining AP as a photography intern. Originally from Hong Kong, she is entering her final year at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she is studying journalism. She has worked on visual storytelling projects exploring humanitarian issues, including community outreach in East Africa and personal narratives around identity and resistance. She is also interested in East Asian politics, social movements and wildlife — especially big cats.

Lydia Doye, text editing intern, London 

Lydia Doye will be joining the Global Text Desk in London. A talented editor and writer, Lydia graduated in January with a multimedia journalism diploma from News Associates, an NCTJ-accredited school that certifies postgraduate journalism courses, after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Durham University. She has worked as a part-time foreign reporter at The Sun in the spring after interning at various publications. She speaks fluent Spanish and working Arabic.

Inaara Gangji, newsgathering intern, Nairobi 

Inaara Gangji is currently a Master of Journalism candidate at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism in the multimedia track, combining data and visual journalism to bring stories to life. She earned her undergraduate degree in journalism at Northwestern University and has reported on social justice, women’s issues, business, sports and policy in Washington, D.C., East Africa and the Middle East. This year, she received the Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Award and the White House Correspondents Association Scholar Award. Inaara, who is ethnically Indian, was born in Tanzania and raised between Tanzania and Kenya.

Dasia Garner, investigations multimedia intern, Washington, D.C. 

Dasia Garner is a rising senior at North Carolina A&T State University majoring in mass communication. Her background includes anchoring, production and multimedia storytelling. A Chicago native, she has worked as a producer intern at FOX8 WGHP in High Point, North Carolina, and executive producer of her university’s student-led news station. She is a HBCU Science Journalism fellow at MIT’s Knight Science Journalism Program, with a focus on nutritional health. Garner is an Ida B. Wells Society investigative intern and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.

Jaylen Green, race and ethnicity news intern, New York 

Jaylen Green graduated from Columbia University with a master’s degree in journalism. He was a producer for “Where We Wake Up,” an Atlanta-based podcast that tells the stories of Gen Z, Millennials and cultural change. Before pursuing journalism, Jaylen worked as a paralegal, interned for a member of Congress, and attended the Congressional Black Caucus Institute Political Bootcamp. He was an executive board member of Columbia’s National Association of Black Journalists chapter.

Reeno Hashimoto, newsgathering intern, Tokyo  

Reeno Hashimoto studied financial accounting, finance and strategy at Dartmouth’s Pre-MBA Bridge program, did her undergraduate degree at Brown University and is a recent graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She worked at the Japan Unit of the United Nations Development Programme, where she also researched the implications of North Korean nuclear activities on East Asia. Reeno is half Japanese and was born and raised in New York City. She spent childhood summers in Tokyo and rural Colorado, where her father is from. She is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, and eager to cover those beats in Japan.

Michaela Herbst, data intern, San Francisco 

Michaela Herbst holds a master’s degree in data journalism from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in political science from the University of Colorado Boulder. She was a Carnegie-Knight News21 Fellow at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. Her honors include multiple EPPY, Telly, and Webby Awards, the RFK Human Rights Award for Journalism and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Award. At Stanford, she worked for the Peninsula Press and as opinions editor at The Stanford Daily. Michaela has reported on topics including the role of artificial intelligence in abortion access, Hillary Clinton’s book tour and California’s elections. She contributed to The Washington Post’s efforts to implement natural language processing models in its Fatal Force police shooting database.

Gabe Levin, newsgathering intern, Dubai  

Gabe Levin served as the editor-in-chief of The Cornell Daily Sun in Ithaca, New York, where he attends university. He’s previously worked for Haaretz in Israel and the Voice of America, and he has freelanced for other outlets. Gabe will graduate next summer with a bachelor’s in Middle East Studies and English Literature, and he is a recipient of the Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholar Award. In his free time, he loves to walk his cat Scoop, rock climb and play guitar.

Itzel Luna, Entertainment intern, Los Angeles  

Itzel is graduating from Stanford University with a bachelor’s in sociology with data science and a concurrent master’s in journalism. Hailing from Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, she served as a reporter and executive editor for The Stanford Daily’s news section, and has interned for the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, CalMatters and KTLA. Fluent in Spanish, Itzel has primarily reported on social justice issues, Latino communities, immigration and education. At the Journal, she covered the intersection of business and entertainment.

Lorna Petty, social video intern, London 

Lorna Petty graduated this spring with her master’s in journalism and international affairs at Sciences Po in Paris. She has experience working across a variety of local and national British media, including The Telegraph and Prospect Magazine. Lorna enjoys reporting on issues related to human rights and social inequalities.

Luena Rodriguez-Feo Vileira, live blog intern, Washington, D.C.

Luena Rodriguez-Feo Vileira, originally from Miami, is a 2025 graduate of the University of Florida, where she majored in journalism and anthropology. She served as editor-in-chief of Atrium Magazine, her school’s narrative nonfiction publication. She previously interned for the Miami Herald’s audience engagement team, where she wrote local feature and public policy stories, in addition to managing the paper’s newsletter and social media. When she isn’t writing, she can be found sipping green tea and practicing her downward dog (though not all at once).

Claudia Rosel, photography intern, Mexico City 

Claudia Rosel is a Spanish photographer and filmmaker focused on stories at the intersection of migration, climate and conflict. She previously worked in East Africa, spending four years between Kenya and Somalia documenting crises, including drought and human trafficking routes. She is graduating with a master’s in documentary film from Columbia Journalism School, and she holds bachelor’s degrees in audiovisual media & advertising from San Pablo CEU University in Madrid.

Hyojin Yoo, data visualization design intern, New York 

Hyojin Yoo joins us as a data visualization designer intern in the New York bureau. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in data analysis and visualization at the CUNY Graduate Center and holds an MFA in digital media from the Rhode Island School of Design. Hyojin brings a strong background in UI/UX design and front-end development, having previously worked at Studio Pssst and as a design and technology consultant at Shared Value Media, where she contributed to large-scale public initiatives, including COVID-19 response campaigns. 

River Zhi-Hui Zhang, video journalist intern, Washington, D.C.  

River Zhi-Hui Zhang recently worked at the New York Post, where she produced politics and business videos for the company’s homepage and social media accounts. She also has experience shooting news events and long-form documentaries, including a project for PBS on preserving democracy in Thailand. Zhang is a graduate of New York University, majoring in news & documentary. While at NYU, she won the Don R. Mellette Award for excellence in broadcast journalism.
