The role of a free press in a democracy
In response to an announcement from the White House on Wednesday that it has revoked press credentials provided to a CNN reporter, AP released this statement from Washington Bureau Chief Julie Pace:
It is the essential function of a free press in every democracy to independently gather and report information in the public interest, a right that is enshrined in the First Amendment. We strongly reject the idea that any administration would block a journalist’s access to the White House.
