As fans around the world brace for the excitement of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, The Associated Press is recognizing the tournament’s rich history with a sports photo exhibit in Tokyo.
“Celebration of football in Brazil,” an exhibit of historical football photos from AP, opens June 11, at the Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery located in Marunouchi, one of Tokyo’s central business and entertainment hubs.
The exhibit, presented in association with Mitsubishi Estate Co. Ltd. and AFLO Co. Ltd, will comprise some of the most unforgettable World Cup images from 1930 to 2010, including photographs from the inaugural tournament in Uruguay, as well as the first time Japan participated in 1988.
There will also be a display of the uniforms of the 32 countries involved in this year’s tournament. New images will be added as the competition in Brazil gets underway, including highlights from the final match.
“We are proud to be exhibiting again at such an excellent venue and have the opportunity to showcase some iconic images of the World Cup,” said Santiago Lyon, vice president and director of photography at AP. “AP has covered what is one of the world’s most important sports events from the very start and captured some of its most significant moments.”
AP has a tradition of excellence in photojournalism and has won numerous awards for its sports photography.
Koji Aoki, president and CEO of AFLO Co. Ltd, added: “AP photographers don’t just shoot events; they have a talent and ability to bring out a deeper meaning in the pictures that they produce. We hope that this comes across at the exhibition and that those that come along can see and feel more than just photographs.”
