Powerful news images from the Associated Press taken in such varied places as North Korea, Syria, India, Ohio and Colorado were among those that won top prizes in the 2013 Pictures of the Year International contest.
POYi is a program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri’s journalism school.
“We’re pleased that so many AP photographers are being honored in this distinguished competition,” said Santiago Lyon, AP vice president and director of photography. “It’s a testament to the talent, versatility and professionalism of our visual journalists around the world.”
The winners were announced today. In total, AP won 17 prizes, including eight first place awards.
