The Associated Press today announced that it is working with the Xposure International Photography Festival in the United Arab Emirates to highlight a selection of AP’s compelling images of the Middle East.
The work of Muhammed Muheisen, AP’s chief photographer for the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan, will be on display from Oct. 12 to 15. Most recently, Muheisen has been documenting the migrant crisis, including overcrowded refugee camps and the challenges facing those who have crossed the Mediterranean to uncertain futures in Europe.
“Covering events across this region for the past 15 years for AP has allowed me to capture the power of the human spirit at times of deepest adversity,” Muheisen said. “Through this exhibition and seminars, I hope to tell these victims’ stories, bringing the viewer a wider understanding of the struggles these ordinary people have faced.”
Muheisen will host two seminars during the conference. The first, “Reaching an Audience,” on Oct. 12, will focus on the power of social media, its future and the need for technology to facilitate storytelling across social channels. The second, “Telling Their Stories,” on Oct. 13, will explore the impact of conflict on children.
Muheisen has received numerous international photojournalism awards. He was a member of the teams that earned AP the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography in 2005, for coverage of the war in Iraq, and again in 2013, for images of the civil war in Syria.
The Xposure International Photography Festival is an initiative of Sharjah Media Centre and will take place at Expo Centre Sharjah. AP is one of the event’s strategic partners. All exhibitions and seminars are free and open to the public.
