Georgia LGBTQ Rights

A day after sweeping legislation against LGBTQ+ rights was approved by the Georgian parliament, a transgender woman was stabbed to death in her apartment in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. Rights advocates saw a direct line between the legislation that would severely curtail LGBTQ+ rights in the conservative Caucasus nation and the killing of Kesaria Abramidze.

Litvinova, a senior correspondent based in Tallinn, Estonia, and Megrelidze, a producer based in Tbilisi, saw this as a solid, harrowing peg with which to shine the light on the plight of the LGBTQ+ community in Georgia that has seen little international scrutiny.  The journalists worked seamlessly together to report an important all-formats story, aided by expertise from TSH editor Brian Friedman in New York. Freelance cameraman Zorik Muradov worked with Megrelidze to film interviews and b-roll in Tbilisi. The text story got 1.2 million pageviews on AP News, with a strong engagement time of nearly 1.5 minutes.
