After meeting about a year ago, Teresa de Miguel, video producer for the Climate and Environment team, and Lucía Torres, head of video at environmental news platform Mongabay, collaborated on a video about chinampas, the island farms created by the Aztecs in Mexico City thousands of years ago. While much has been written about chinampas, until now no one had explored the macho culture that had prevented women from owning them.

Mongabay received a grant from the Solutions Journalism Network to produce the video, which allowed them to hire services that are rarely available in AP video coverage, such as a sound recordist, an animator, and an editor for sound and color correction. The result is a captivating seven-minute piece that takes the audience deep into these ancient island farms.

The video, produced and directed by de Miguel and Torres, was shot by freelance camerawoman Monica Wise with the help of camera assistant Aldara Saan and sound recordist Enrique Domínguez. The final piece was edited by Emmanuel Mairesse and includes animations by Studio Saka.
