Goodman built on earlier reporting about industrial krill fishing in Antarctica with a notable scoop about overfishing in one of the world’s most sensitive sea areas. A source he’d cultivated from earlier reporting shared a July catch report that showed trawling for the tiny crustacean critical to whales’ diets was at a record and nearing a limit that would trigger unprecedented early closure of the fishery.

Goodman worked with Global Fishing Watch for analysis that ultimately connected the heavy fishing pressure to the failure of U.S., Chinese and other governments to agree last year on a management plan that might have spared the fishery. The work led to calls for urgent action to protect against further degradation of the environment.
