AP Media Writer David Bauder and freelance photographer Kevin Wolf took readers and viewers inside the final moments of the Pentagon’s press office.

When the Pentagon issued new rules for journalists, Bauder wrote timely spot stories and provided video commentary explaining which news organizations refused to sign the new terms and why. He documented the moment when journalists began packing up and carrying out their belongings, offering audiences a view of a rare and significant standoff over press access. He followed up with a second piece that detailed how Pentagon reporters were continuing to do their work despite the new restrictions.

Meanwhile, Kevin Wolf was the only still photographer to gain access to the building during the mass walkout. Eluding competing photographers at the entrance, Wolf captured exclusive images of reporters clearing out the press office, including shots of empty desks, packed boxes and journalists sharing their final moments in the space.

Judges noted the uniqueness of the images and how the coverage provided accountability and transparency at a moment of press freedom concern.
