Going into the holiday week, the DC photo team had to scramble to find out how US Congress was going to pass President Trump’s multi-trillion-dollar tax breaks and spending cuts bill.
It all started on July 3, with Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries’ speech on the House floor at 4 am and ending a record-breaking 8 hours, 44 minutes later. Freelance photographer Rod Lamkey was assigned to cover Capitol Hill and was granted brief access inside the House chamber to photograph Rep. Jeffries’ speech. He was the only photographer to make images. When the House finally passed the bill later that day, Julia Nikhinson turned what would typically be a mundane signing ceremony by Speaker Johnson into a renaissance painting.
