Foreign Aid-Myanmar’s Misery

Kristen Gelineau, who has reported on Myanmar and the Rohingya crisis since 2017, investigated claims that U.S. aid cuts were causing deaths, contrary to American officials’ assertions that they were not. With foreign journalists barred from the region and communications cut off, Gelineau relied on trusted local contacts to secure rare interviews inside Rohingya camps — including one with a father whose child died of malnutrition.

Alongside photographer Bram Janssen, she documented refugee suffering on the Myanmar-Thailand border, interviewing 21 refugees, health workers and aid staff. Though barred from entering the camps, the team was able to include footage filmed by a translator of one of the story’s main characters in her shelter. Janssen captured striking stills and video on the Thai side of the border.

To complement the reporting, Dario Lopez-Mills created a powerful photo illustration of the 2-year-old child featured in the lead, drawing readers into the striking visual presentation.
