AP sports writer Andrew Dampf drew on years of cultivating sources in elite ski racing to land an exclusive interview following the stunning Olympic crash of U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn.
In the aftermath of the accident, Dampf remained in steady contact with Vonn’s father, Alan Kildow, before persuading him to speak on the record in a telephone interview. When Kildow agreed, the conversation was an AP exclusive, while competitors relied largely on Vonn’s social media posts for updates.
Kildow told The Associated Press the crash was unrelated to the ACL tear Vonn had suffered earlier in her left knee and said there “will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.”
Judges cited Dampf’s persistence, deep sourcing and competitive edge in delivering exclusive insight at a pivotal moment.
