In a highly competitive and tightly controlled environment, AP’s Washington team delivered a major visual win by moving images of President Trump at the podium before the address even began on live video — a rare and significant speed advantage.
Washington photographer Alex Brandon, photo editor Jon Elswick and technology lead systems engineer Mark Macintosh worked in close coordination to execute the effort. Their planning and technical precision ensured that AP’s images were transmitted and published ahead of the broadcast feed, giving customers an immediate visual of the moment before most audiences had seen it live.
AP was one of only two news organizations with photographers inside the room. The speed and quality of AP’s image distribution were so strong that even the competing outlet used AP’s photo rather than its own.
The achievement reflected years of coordination, technical expertise and newsroom collaboration coming together at a critical moment.
