Coverage of one of the most anticipated tournaments in the world of sports showcased the AP at its best, leaning into more of the culture and cross-beat moments to bring the story closer to audiences around the world.

Sports writer Brian Mahoney anchored AP’s cross-format coverage of the US Open, keeping readers engaged with an array of content. Coverage offered inclusive storytelling on breaking news, from the tournament favorite Jannik Sinner withdrawing to the mixed doubles partnership of Serena Williams and Carlos Alacaraz, and Naomi Osaka’s outfits.

Mahoney received much-needed assists from sports writer Stephen Whyno and reporter Joceyln Noveck, while Nandini Gupta produced social video. The photo report was stunning and comprehensive. AP photographers Kirsty Wigglesworth, Seth Wenig, Frank Franklin II, Yuki Iwamura and Adam Hunger excelled in key moments and their images were expertly edited by a team led by Alyssa Goodman and Sydney Schaefer. Several matches started late and did not finish until very early morning but the whole team not only endured, but excelled, despite the long days. Their due diligence kept AP on top of the news whether matches ended at 3 p.m. or 3 a.m.

The judges were impressed by the team’s tenacity to endure the multiple hurdles and their creativity in delivering visually compelling coverage.

For engaging and diverse reporting that took the coverage much further than tennis and sports, the US Open coverage team win this week’s Best of the AP — Second Winner.
