AP names first VP for digital advertising sales

detlet-ken

Ken Detlet, a veteran of the digital advertising industry who most recently led sales and marketing for Mashable, has joined the AP as vice president for digital advertising strategy and sales.

The position is a first for the global news agency as it builds an internal advertising team to support a growing line of digital offerings that include AP’s mobile applications, sports microsites, online video channels and social network accounts.

Detlet joins the Strategy and Digital Products team at AP, reporting to Senior Vice President Jim Kennedy.

“This is a strategic move for AP, as we grow our revenue from advertising and sponsorships,” Kennedy said. “Ken has all the right skills and experience to chart a unique course for us.”

Though AP is best-known as a provider of licensed content to other media outlets, its offerings also include products that are supported by advertising revenue. AP Mobile is a top-rated mobile application that features AP news along with local coverage from more than 1,000 of its newspaper and broadcast affiliates. On the Web, AP provides several hosted content packages for its affiliates, including a line of embeddable sports microsites for pro football, college basketball and football, and auto racing. In addition, AP maintains a popular online video channel on YouTube, as well as widely followed social network accounts.

AP has pursued national advertising support for these properties mostly through third-party networks in the past. While those relationships will continue, Detlet will develop a program and team to work directly with advertisers on custom opportunities that could span the full portfolio.

“We feel we have a lot to offer brands with the breadth and depth of our content and the distribution we can provide,” Kennedy said.

Before his stint at Mashable, Detlet directed sales for Ziff Davis Inc. and led national sales for Gannett Digital. He spent more than 15 years with Dow Jones, working across the company’s brands in various sales and management capacities and helping to lead the integration of DJ’s digital properties into a single business operation as executive director of sales operations. He is a graduate of Saint Peter’s College, in Jersey City, N.J., with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
