NEW YORK — Erskine Bowles, who served as White House chief of staff under President Bill Clinton and later co-chaired President Barack Obama’s bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, will address members of The Associated Press at the news cooperative’s annual meeting on April 15 in Orlando, Fla., during a luncheon co-hosted by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), which is also convening in Orlando.
A North Carolina native, Bowles also was head of the Small Business Administration and deputy chief of staff under President Clinton. In 2006, he became president of the University of North Carolina, serving four years. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Columbia University’s business school, Bowles began his career at Morgan Stanley in New York and later founded a Charlotte-based investment banking firm.
Bowles headed the fiscal commission alongside former U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson. In 2010, the panel proposed a deficit reduction plan — “A Bipartisan Path Forward to Securing America’s Future” — that combines health care and tax reforms with mandatory spending cuts, stronger discretionary caps and other measures.
The two men have since led the nonpartisan Moment of Truth Project, which takes its name from the commission’s final report and seeks to spur discussion about the nation’s fiscal challenges.
The AP annual meeting will be hosted by President and CEO Gary Pruitt and Mary Junck, chairman of the AP board of directors. They will deliver reports to the AP membership.
