Associated Press journalists from around the world are converging on the coastal city of Sochi, Russia, to cover the trials, triumphs and spectacle of the Winter Olympics alongside their colleagues from AP’s Moscow bureau and other AP experts on Russian affairs.
AP will report on the action from the slopes to the skating rinks, while drawing on its deep knowledge of the region to put the games in political and social context. There will be reporters assigned to cover security, logistics, human rights issues that may arise and Sochi itself.
The AP sports team will be joined in Sochi by such veteran journalists as Russia News Director Caro Kriel and Washington-based reporter Steven R. Hurst, a former Moscow bureau chief. AP has had a presence in Russia since 1900.
“The eyes of the world will be on Russia and AP is uniquely positioned to capture every aspect of these historic games,” said Michael Giarrusso, AP’s global sports editor.
The AP is focused on providing an array of mobile-friendly content in text, photos, videos and interactives for use on tablets and smartphones.
Via a feature called “Sochi Scene” AP will deliver frequently updated briefs, as well as photos and videos, from the Olympic venues, the local scene and the athletes’ hometowns.
AP will also compile “5 Things to Know” about the Olympics twice daily and packages of buzz-worthy photos of the day’s action that readers may have missed.
